In 2-stroke diesel engine all the work induction compression power and exhaust are completed in 2-stroke.

In other words every second stroke is a power stroke.

The 2 stroke diesel engine only air is filled to the cylinder and when the Piston rich TDC this air is compressed to the extent that its temperature rises quite high.

That time fuel diesel oil is injected in this burning hot air in find optimise from which gets ignited.

The burning of fine atomized fuel with hot air causes abnormal pressure on the Piston as the piston is the only moving part in the cylinder it moves down due to pressure on top of it and we get power stroke.


While studying the working of 2-Stroke Petrol engine we had seen that while air fuel mixture was being supplied to the cylinder from Inlet port, Part of this is used to get escape through the exhaust port resulting in loss of fuel and loss of horsepower.

Whereas in 2-stroke diesel engine it is only the air even if it escapes we do not lose much.


In 2-stroke diesel engine both port intake and exhaust, are made in the cylinder as shown in image and the Piston use is also dome type.

When the Piston travels down the exhaust port gets and covered by the Piston.

When the Piston Travels a little more down in the inland port also get and covered by the Piston from where, the fresh air finds its way in the cylinder.

>Compression strokes.

An after completing this downward travel when the Piston starts travelling up from BDC to TDC It closes the inlet and exhaust port and the air which is trapped in the cylinder starts getting compress.

Due to high compression ratio the temperature and pressure of air Rises very high.

At soon as the Piston reaches near TDC diesel fuel is spray in fine atomizer from to the highly compressed gases.

>Power stroke.

A stated about due to the spring of atomizer diesel on highly compressed air there is spontaneous combustion gases expand rapidly causing Piston to travel from TDC to BDC giving us power stroke.

As soon as the Piston reach near bdc the exhaust gases escape out through exhaust port and covered by the Piston thereby relieving Piston top of Just cause by expanded gases.

In the meantime the inland port also opens causing air to come in the cylinder.

This air also help in sweeping out exhaust kaycee and does the cycle continues.

★Facts about 2-stroke diesel engine.

→2-stroke engine has the power stroke then 4-stroke engine and as such develop more horsepower.

→2-stroke engine consume little more fuel.

→In 2-stroke engine crankshaft has a uniform turning talk as every time the Piston comes from top to bottom it is a power stroke.

→For send more air in 2-stroke engine supercharger are used to that engine develop sufficient power.

→Due to less number of parts two stroke engine are lighter in weight.
